Basic Life Support Training

Basic Life Support training has historically been aligned with influenza vaccination season and required a face-to-face assessment every 2 years (annually in some Health Boards). However, as more clinical services become available through community pharmacy, the potential need to perform BLS may also increase.

The decision therefore has been made, to align the Basic Life Support training with all other NHS clinical staff, which require an annual, face-to-face assessment of competence, for all those providing any of the following clinical services:

·       Vaccinations
·       Sore Throat Test and Treat
·       IP services

HEIW are running Basic Life Support events from January through to May, which will include a 1 hour 15 minutes face-to-face assessment of technique session and will take place on Sunday’s, across all Health Boards. You may complete the annual basic life support annual refresher from another provider if you wish. There are many training providers who offer BLS training and assessments, but only training that meets the Resuscitation Council UK standards and involves a face to face assessment of your competence carrying out BLS is acceptable.

All pharmacists seeking to commence provision of IP or STTT after 1st April 2022 will need to complete BLS as part of their initial accreditation.

All pharmacists providing IP or STTT prior to April 1st (i.e. existing providers) will need to complete BLS by 1st October 2022.  The majority of these will likely do this as part of flu vaccination preparation, but for the potentially small number who will not be providing flu vaccination, they will need to complete their BLS accreditation by 1st Oct, or face being unable to continue providing IP or STTT services.
