IP Services in Clusters

Community Pharmacy Wales Pharmacy Wales are aware that some contractors have been approached by their primary care clusters to work as an Independent Prescriber for occasional sessions within a GP practice. CPW have discussed this with the Health Boards who have stated that it is not their intention to support or encourage clusters to engage community pharmacy IP services in this way as the “value” is to provide an IP service in a community pharmacy setting and not as a clinic within a GP practice.
However, if contractors wish to provide this service and are approached, CPW would like to remind contractors that the £250/ day (£150/session) fee agreed for the transitional IP service was developed to cover the costs of back-fill and does not include any addition of fair return.
A fee of between £400 - £500 / day is the proposed rate.
Contractors are also advised to ensure that they have discussed the issue of indemnity both with their own provider and also that the cluster/ individual GP practice contacts their own indemnity provider to discuss this before commencing the service.
