Training Requirements for Flu Vaccination 2020/21

2020-21 Community Pharmacy Influenza Vaccination Enhanced Service

The 2020-21 flu season will be strategically important to minimise flu morbidity at a time of continuing COVID-19 activity, and reduce pressure on the NHS (WHC (2020)006).  A Welsh Health Circular outlining the flu programme this year is expected in the near future, and further is guidance likely to follow.
The issue of PPE requirements has been discussed with Welsh Government and further guidance will be issued in respect of what will be required and how to use it. (PPE will be supplied for this purpose).
It has been agreed nationally that the following approach will be taken in respect of flu vaccination training requirements for 20/21:
For those who have provided flu vaccination in 2019/20 (either NHS or private or both)
  1. Vaccination training:
  • If providing only NHS flu vaccinations – Public Health Wales will provide access to the “FluTwo” module for pharmacists to complete as their annual update for this year (no need to attend face to face vaccination training). This eLearning module is used by other professional groups across Wales. (Confirmation of how to access the module and how it will link to NESA will be provided by HEIW)
  • If providing private and NHS flu vaccinations – pharmacists should complete the online update provided by their (accredited) private training provider (no need to attend face to face vaccination training this year – unless required by their private provider to provide the private service). As in previous years HEIW will host a list of accredited training providers.
  1. BLS training:
  • If attended face to face BLS training in 2019/20 – there is no requirement for any training this year (in any LHB)
  • If due to attend BLS training this year (i.e. last accessed BLS training in 2018/19 in any LHB except BCUHB) – an online “refresher” module will be provided for completion (no requirement to attend face to face this year)

For those who have not provided flu vaccination in 2019/20 (plus any pharmacist who wishes to access additional training)
  1. Vaccination training:
  • If providing only NHS flu vaccinations – Public Health Wales will provide access to the FluTwo module (pharmacists will select the new to vaccination option). HEIW will arrange a face to face competency assessment
  • If intending to provide private flu vaccination training – please contact your (accredited) private provider to obtain information on training availability
  1. BLS training:
  • Pharmacists new to providing flu vaccination must access face to face BLS training and competency assessment (this may be in combination with online learning), HEIW will arrange face to face competency assessment for those providing NHS vaccination. (Private vaccination face to face training also includes BLS training)
